Today’s modern cruise liners are the latest in a long line of historic ships. In the golden age of steamship travel, companies such as Cunard and White Star ruled the waves and set the standards for speed and luxury on board their fleets. Back in the last century, it wasn’t uncommon for a voyage on board even a fast ship to take weeks or months, so passengers had to be given the very best in food, accommodation and entertainment so they were happy and content on the voyage, even more so than today’s trips on long haul flights.
With modern air travel being increasingly aggravating, interest in cruise holidays is starting to pick up again, and although many are still quite expensive the cruise companies are taking note. Luxury cruise offers at affordable prices are now becoming available for an increasing number of destinations. One possibility is to embark at a different port along the way, having a shorter and cheaper trip, but being able to fit a cruise in as part of a larger holiday. This way you get to experience all the comforts and luxury of a modern cruise for a short time.
A dazzling range of destinations is available, from sun drenched Caribbean island-hopping to explorations of oceans on the the other side of the world. Companies like Regent Seven Seas cruises or Silver seas cruises have fleets sailing all over the world, and will include on their destinations a tour that will encompass just about every sea and continent that you would care to visit. Whichever cruise offer you choose, staff will always be there to make the trip memorable and special for you, and can usually be relied on to provide anything that you request. Entertainment and food on board should also be second-to-none. Like the steamships of the last century, cruise companies engage the best chefs to create signature dining on board their ships, and also many will have a visiting circuit of speakers and celebrities to keep passengers entertained on enrichment programmes on the voyage.

The old concept of river cruises is thankfully being overhauled – no more old and dirty tubs that chug up an down unremarkable sections of river with nothing much to see or do except endure a monotonous commentary from the tour guide. A good job that modern alternatives, even in the UK, can provide a much more enjoyable experience.
Luxury river cruises are being seen as a welcome addition to the repertoire of cruise options available, and considerably cheaper than the ocean-going variants too. Despite usually being smaller, the river cruise ships are equally lavish and provide all the modern comforts and luxuries. With gourmet dining, signature menus and high quality entertainment, passengers will never find themselves without anything to do if they decline any of the shore visits, and one of the advantages of a smaller ship is that you can visit locations that the larger Seabourn cruises can’t go.
You have a similarly bewildering choice of destinations as you have with the ocean-bound cruise firms. Nearly every country has a fine and intricate system of waterways and these often form the backbone of their economic and social hubs, so using the river is an ideal way to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a country. A popular choice of destination is the Loire or Rhine valley, where you have plenty of chances to stop and sample the local wine production! If you fancy something a little more exotic, then rivers in other countries such as the Nile, Mekong and Yangtze will provide a memorable voyage as they take you past the fascinating sights and locations along their length.
Added to the frequent stopovers at points of interest, many like a river cruise as you don’t need to be a hardened sailor: the land is always in sight and rivers will never be as rough as the open sea. As a possibility to the range of Luxury cruise offers it certainly has much to offer the discerning traveller

No one has any spare time these days, so when we do get a precious holiday break it’s more importnat than ever to get the most out of it. Being faced with crowded airports, delays, queues, searches and fighting for places on the transfers isn’t the best way to start relaxing yourself on a holiday. Surely a better option would be to turn the journey into a proper part of the holiday so you can start enjoying yourself right away?
River cruises will let you appreciate the sights and sounds of a country as you travel through, fully enjoying the scenery that otherwise you would miss. You will have a great chance to explore and indulge yourself in a number of stops at local ports and towns that form part of your itinerary. Although it’s unlikely that you will run out of things to see and do, most of the river cruise ships are the last word in luxury and offer a range of fine dining and entertainment aboard, so even if you decide to stay embarked during your voyage you will always feel spoiled.
If you think that a river cruise may be a bit too much in the slow lane, then a luxury ocean trip may be more your thing. Modern liners are huge and provide just about every imaginable comfort and diversion for adults and children. Fleet ships run by those like Silversea cruises contain every possible amenity you will require, and also let you select which port you embark on your voyage. This means that you get added flexibility in planning your holiday and the destinations you can visit. Ocean cruises have a reputation for being expensive, especially as the service from staff is so attentive and they travel to so many exotic locations. However, just about every tour operator and travel agent will feature a number of cruise offers that will save you a great deal on the listed price.

We’ve all been there on package trips, having undergone the nightmare of the airport and being crammed onto an aircraft, we find the hotel accommodation in the middle of nowhere and spend five days trying to get to every tourist trap within a reasonable journey before having to return home. It’s not the best way to really get to know a country properly, but not many of us feel up to hauling on our backpacks and setting a course for the great unknown for an authentic holiday.
There is another solution, and that is to take the boat. River cruises are available in most countries and will show you the centres of culture that first grew up in that area as you travel. In many locations, these are real hidden treasures as often they get missed by the larger transport hubs and river is still the best way to visit. Most feature numerous stops along their way to let you truly take in the culture, right at the heart of a country. From the comfort of a luxurious berth you can enjoy the wonderful scenery and still have all the benefits of first class service.
For those with more exotic tastes, an ocean tour might be a better option. With huge liners that offer the same luxury as a top hotel, you may think that these would be too expensive for the normal holiday budget. However, lots of cruise offers can be booked via the cruise lines and travel companies, so you can get a tailored luxury cruise for a similar price to a package air holiday. Visiting a series of Caribbean Islands, or stopping at the ports along the Italian coast is a wonderful way of truly appreciating the diverse range of an area. Cruise firms such as Seabourn cruises have an enormous selection of locations and ports to choose from, allowing you to pick a completely unique holiday to suit your taste.

Many people seem to think that enjoying a luxury cruise holiday is something only the rich and privileged can afford, but that simply isn’t the case. Air travel is starting to creak as the terminals struggle to cope with the influx of passengers and unreliable cheap flights throwing timetables into chaos, so the option of a stylish river or ocean cruise is increasingly attractive. Even better, it’s an industry like any other so there are Cruise offers at comparable prices or better to the usual package deal abroad, but without compromising on the lavish service and attention that is synonymous with a cruise holiday. If you were to choose between the normal push and shove in the airport terminal compared with a personal welcome to your suite and complimentary drinks, then a cruise suddenly becomes a very attractive option indeed?
What would be your dream cruise? River cruises offer the chance to really get to know a country in intimate detail, threading through all the towns and ports that will have chiefly grown up along the water’s edge. No need to worry with airport or hotel transfers, your accommodation will take you through the vital part of the area’s culture allowing you to enjoy many of the local attractions as you go. Designed for smaller waterways, river cruise ships are able to visit towns and ports that would ordinarily be off the main travel routes, so are an easy and luxurious way to discover hidden jewels and avoid the mainstream crush of tourists on your travels.
If you fancy visiting a wide range of locations, then perhaps an ocean cruise would be more to your liking. Several companies operate grand ocean-going liners, often referred to as “floating hotels” as the range of comforts and amenities on board are second-to-none. A familiar name from the grand days of ocean travel, Cunard cruises operate a thoroughly modern fleet of cruise ships that sail regularly all over the world. They offer a huge range of options to the traveller, from locations, durations and special offers as well as boasting one of the newest luxury cruise ships – the MS Queen Elizabeth which launched last month.
