Portugal – Ideas On Where To Go
If you are looking for a fantastic European holiday destination, then you should definitely give Portugal a go. We look at some of Portugal’s best holiday destinations to give you a flavor for the place. One brilliant location is the Azores. These are a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean. While not part of the Portuguese mainland, they are very popular with tourists as they have great facilities and a lovely all year round climate, coupled with breathtaking scenery, such as volcanic features and stunning lagoons.
One of the most popular places for tourists to visit is the Algarve, which boasts over 150km of gorgeous coastline and a hot, dry microclimate that’s created by the region being separated from the rest of the country by a group of mountains. The Algarve is in the south of Portugal and is popular with tourists, particularly from Germany and the UK. Tourists have lots of choice in locations such as Lagos and Albufeira as there are plenty of hotels in the region.
Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and is another great place to visit on holiday. As the streets are really steep, cable cars are popular for transport. The city has both new and old quarters, which all offer a fantastic city experience. You could relax in the old part of the city on one of the many terraces, which are great for sitting back with coffee and food. There’s also good nightlife, museums, mosaics and inns, making the westernmost city in Europe a brilliant place to be.
Another brilliant Portuguese destination away from the mainland is the group of Madeira Islands, which are about 700 miles southwest of Portugal and form an island archipelago. There are some beautiful mountains and other scenery and the mild year-round climate is a big draw for tourists. You could sample some of the region’s famous Madeira wine or find out more about the local agriculture industry to add a bit of culture to your stay and make your visit to the islands even better.
One final great holiday destination is the city of Porto, which offers a fun, alternative holiday experience. The city is a European Capital of Culture and offers a cosmopolitan experience that is enhanced by the combination of old, winding streets and new roads throughout the city. It’s the second largest city in Portugal and is in the north of the country. It’s also called the Granite City as so many of its buildings, including some historic churches, are made out of granite and iron. It also offers good wine.
